What is transgender? There are a lot of transgender celebrities in the news at the moment making this a very current topic of discussion. For example, Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox.
Transgender – Denoting or relating to a person whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to conventional notions of male or female gender.
If you experiment or move between genders you probably fit under the umbrella term “transgender”. “Transsexual” is where it gets a little more specific. If a person feels like they’ve been born into the wrong gender, they may sometimes seek to correct their gender, possibly with surgery. They will identify as transsexual.
Biological explanations for transgender
Some scientists have found variations in the brain structure of both MTF transsexuals, Male To Female, and FTM transsexuals, Female To Male. The test subjects had the typical brain pattern of their preferred gender identity, in both cases.
Also, scientists have found that both MTF and FTM transsexuals have variations in hormone binding genes, whereas FTM transsexuals might be lacking a few female-only gene distribution patterns.
Transphobia is the irrational fear of transsexuals
Transphobia is so common, and can lead to bullying in schools and workplaces. Transphobia usually occurs because people don’t understand transsexualism or because they were brought up in a family where they were taught to believe certain things are wrong.
I know a lot of people are wondering how a person physically transitions. If some is a MTF transsexual, the male genitals will be reshaped so they look like, and as far as possible function like, female genitalia. Also prior to surgery MTF transsexuals usually start HRT, hormone replacement therapy. Facial hair removal occurs if HRT begins after puberty. These are the basic surgeries a MTF transsexual will undergo, however some MTF transsexuals might get a boob job, facial feminization surgery, a tracheal shave and various other procedures.
Whereas a FTM transsexuals surgeries are a little different. Obviously there is the the genital augmentation where they alter the female genitalia so it looks and, again as far as possible, functions. However a lot of FTM transsexuals do not have genital reassignment surgery, instead they get their breats removed, and their chests contoured so they have a typically male chest shape., and a hysterectomy. A hysterectomy is a surgery to remove a woman’s uterus. And as usual the surgeries are usually preceded by beginning HRT.
I hope that gives you a bit of an explanation for what transgender and transsexual are. It is important to be educated on topics such as this so you can form an education opinion on topics which are very prominent in the media at the moment. Whilst you may not be transsexual, or know anyone who is, the most important thing is that you respect others and their sexuality or viewpoint.
Have a great day! Xx
